Ready to Take Action?

TAKE ACTION

You can take action right now to stop the fossil fuel industry’s delay tactics—from their deflection of responsibility and greenwashing to their outright denial.

These delay tactics are why we face a climate emergency. For decades, the fossil fuel industry has used disinformation and false claims of legitimacy to block action on climate, knowingly and gravely endangering our health and our future. The time to stop them is now!

Sharing what you’ve learned about fossil fuel disinformation is one of the most important things you can do to weaken the industry’s cultural influence and political power, enabling ambitious climate policy. Climate dialogue is civic action! Through this civic action, we can achieve the progress we deserve, and a livable and just future.

Remember, 57% of us already see through the industry’s lies and know they’re responsible for the damages caused by climate change. All we need to do is to start saying that out loud.

Sometimes people feel that if they come from a “blue state” their calls won’t matter. On the contrary, they matter even more. What we need most of all, and much more than trying to convince officials who don’t believe in climate change, is convincing politicians who understand the truth about the climate crisis to act with real urgency and passion. That is within our reach, and it will make all the difference.

CALL

Please call the White House and your Congressional representatives to voice your concerns. Every call counts—staff members record every constituent concern, and they know that one call most often reflects the shared opinion of hundreds or thousands of people.

STEP 1: FIND OUT WHO REPRESENTS YOU IN CONGRESS AND HOW TO CONTACT THEM

Everyone has multiple Congressional representatives: two Senators and one Member of the House of Representatives.

Click here, enter your address, and mark the “federal” checkbox to find out who you should call.

STEP 2: DO A LITTLE RESEARCH (IF YOU WANT TO—THE CALL COUNTS EITHER WAY!)

Are your representatives doing all they can to protect us from a changing climate? Try searching their name along with “climate change,” and you can check here to see if they have taken the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge.

STEP 3: PICK UP THE PHONE AND SHARE YOUR VIEWS

Remember that your call matters! Every call contributes to the social momentum necessary for creating real climate solutions.

First, call the White House at 202-456-1111 and introduce yourself. Let them know that breaking the grip of the fossil fuel industry and addressing the climate crisis with real urgency are crucial to you as a voter or constituent.

When you call your representatives, introduce yourself again with your name and where you live. Here are some specific suggestions you can make:

  1. They should take the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge if they haven’t already. We have a right to know that our elected representatives aren’t at risk of being influenced by fossil fuel campaign donations!

  2. They should work to end fossil fuel subsidies. Every year, the US government channels billions of our tax dollars to oil and gas corporations, propping up an out-of-date, dirty industry that’s causing climate mayhem.

  3. They should eliminate the fossil fuel industry’s seat at the policy-making table. The companies that have knowingly worsened the climate crisis, endangering us, should not have a voice in our climate policy! No more business as usual.

It’s powerful to share your own story, too—tell them about what you learned at Beyond Lies, or talk about how climate change caused by the industry is affecting what you care about. The critical change-making move is to let your representatives know you are a constituent who cares about climate and that you see through the fossil fuel industry’s disinformation to the truth.
